Call for Algorithmic Art

Call for Algorithmic Art: Open until August 31
Submit your art

You won't make it on PyCon Greece? We got you!

As part of PyCon Greece 2026, we are organising an Algorithmic Art Exhibition at INNOVATHENS, a parallel event showcasing artworks created through Python code.

We invite members of the Python community to submit visual artworks where the final piece is created by an algorithm written in Python. The code itself should be an essential part of the creative process, transforming ideas, rules, and mathematical concepts into a visual result.

Who Should Submit

This call is open to anyone who uses Python creatively.

You do not need to be a professional artist, researcher, or experienced Python developer. We welcome submissions from programmers, designers, educators, students, and anyone who has explored the relationship between code and visual creativity.

If you have created a digital painting, procedural composition, geometric artwork, fractal, pattern, or other visual experiment using Python, we would like to see it.

What We Are Looking For

We are interested in artworks generated by Python programs, including:

  • Algorithmic paintings and digital illustrations
  • Generative geometric compositions
  • Fractal and mathematical artworks
  • Procedural patterns and visual experiments
  • Creative coding projects that produce a visual piece

The submitted artwork must be created through your own code and creative process. The use of AI tools for assistance during development is allowed, as with other programming tools, but submissions must represent the work and ideas of the artist/coder.

We will not accept submissions where the code or the final artwork has been primarily generated by generative AI tools without meaningful human authorship and creative contribution. The submitted code should reflect human authorship, understanding, and creative decisions.

Submission Requirements

Each submission should include:

  • The final artwork in a suitable resolution for exhibition.
  • A title and short description explaining the idea behind the piece.
  • The artist/coder name.
  • A link to a GitHub Gist containing the complete Python source code.
  • Instructions explaining how to run the code and reproduce the artwork.
  • Information about required dependencies, libraries, assets, fonts, or other resources.

The submitted code should be complete and executable. The organising team should be able to generate the artwork by following the provided instructions.

If your artwork uses randomness, please include the seed or configuration required to reproduce the submitted version.

Selection Criteria

Submissions will be reviewed based on:

  • Creative use of Python
  • Artistic expression and visual impact
  • Originality of the concept
  • Quality of implementation
  • Reproducibility of the result

The complexity of the code is not the main focus. We are interested in thoughtful ideas and meaningful ways of using Python as a creative medium.

Exhibition Format

Each selected artwork will be presented in a dedicated exhibition format designed by the PyCon Greece team.

The format will include:

  1. The Code
A visual presentation of the Python source code used to create the artwork.
  2. The Artwork
The final visual result generated by the code.
  3. The Artist Information
The artist/coder’s name, the title of the artwork, and a short description of the piece.

The final layout and dimensions of the exhibition material will be defined by the organising team. The aim is to present both the creative result and the algorithm behind it, allowing visitors to explore the connection between programming and artistic creation.

Practical Details

Selected artworks will be exhibited during PyCon Greece 2026 (12–13 October 2026) at INNOVATHENS as part of the conference’s parallel events programme.

Artists will retain ownership of their work. By submitting, you allow PyCon Greece to display your artwork during the event and use images of the artwork for conference-related communication and promotion, with appropriate attribution.
